Panama City Beach - The Arts

From the Beaches of Long Island, New York to Panama City Beach…This looks like a good opportunity to see some great art and get out of the sun a little while.
VISUAL ARTS CENTER SHOWCASES GUILD HALL EXHIBIT
Exhibit Opening Friday, June 13, 2008--On the last stop of its 2006-2008 tour, 'An Adventure in the Arts' - The Permanent Collection of the Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, NY, will be on exhibition at the Visual Arts Center June 13 thru August 13, 2008, marking the first time that work of this magnitude has traveled to the region. The exhibit is made possible by Presenting Sponsor Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, the City of Panama City, and the Panama City Beach Tourism Development Council.
Once again the Visual Arts Center's summer highlight will open with an outdoor gala in the center of downtown Panama City, making for a beautiful evening complete with music, dancing, and dinner by the Boatyard Restaurant and music by ‘The Jazzmen’. Tickets for Opening Night are $35.00 ($25.00 for members) and are on sale now.
Established in 1931, The Guild Hall Museum is the primary cultural center on the Eastern End of Long Island. This unique region has attracted many diversely talented people such as artists, writers, musicians, actors, and directors over the years. In the 1870s, Hudson River School painters portrayed the white sand beaches of eastern Long Island. Thomas Moran and his family settled permanently in 1884 as his home and studio became the center of life for artists who visited the village. In the teens, twenties and thirties many artists including Guy Pene du Bois and George Bellows, visited the area. Later after WWII, the Surrealists aided by artist and philanthropist Gerald Murphy were welcomed guests. They were followed by the Abstract Expressionist artists Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Willem de Kooning, Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol, Photo Realists Audrey Flack and Chuck Close, 80's and 90's Neo-expressionist artists Eric Fischl, David Salle and Julian Schnabel as well as many contemporary artists today such as Ross Bleckner, Donald Sultan and April Gornik. Included in the collection are 73 works by these and many more significant artists.
New Summer Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 10am to 6pm and, Sunday - 12 noon to 6pm.

Panama City Beach - Pier Park Concerts

The fourth annual Summer Concert in the Park series held annually at Pier Park on Panama City Beach begins Thursday May 29th from 7 to 9 pm. I’m always amazed at the huge crowd this brings all summer. This event put on by Panama City Beach is a great place to go with your family and enjoy a night out just spending time with one another listening to some music and socializing with others in the community. The cool thing is that it is every Thursday through September 11th. So if you can’t make it one week, it happens again the next week. Panama City Beach - Rip Tides

Yesterday evening on the Beach wasn't fun. Although my family was safe one man was not. One swimmer remained missing late Saturday, a day with at least 45 beach rescues in Bay County, authorities said.
The rescues, which continued late into the evening, were the most local law enforcement could remember. "This is the worst ever," Bay County Sheriff Spokeswoman Ruth Sasser said Saturday night.
It is no fun watching helicopters look for victims.
If you are at the beach when red flags fly please stay out of the water. There is always another day when you follow the safety rules. Please be safe!
