PANAMA CITY BEACH - The Grand Lagoon National saltwater fishing tournament, scheduled for Oct. 3-5, has been canceled, Tournament Chairman Bill Spann announced Monday.
The GLN originally was planned for Aug. 20-24, then postponed until Labor Day Weekend because of Tropical Storm Fay. Labor Day became untenable when Hurricane Gustav formed and later made landfall in Louisiana.
Hurricane Ike made landfall in Texas early Saturday, and it’s uncertain path for several weeks caused anglers to alter their plans. That put preparations for the rescheduled GLN on hold, and Spann and the organizing committee made the difficult decision to cancel this year's event. "This was the final storm," Spann said. "People had become storm weary.
"Boaters have been affected, some directly. Now they're out looking for fuel, and at what price? It got to be too much to hope for having the tournament."
Spann said the principle marinas of Grand Lagoon - Capt. Anderson's, Lighthouse, Pirates Cove and Treasure Island - have committed to next year's event scheduled for Aug. 12-16, 2009.
