Panama City Beach Airport Update

Yea!! There was good news for those of us that support the new Panama City Beach Airport on Thursday because a federal judge in Jacksonville declined to issue a preliminary injunction against the new airport in West Bay. Several environmental groups requested the injunction as part of a lawsuit against the Army Corps of Engineers. The groups want to reverse a permit issued by the corps that allows the Airport Authority to build a new airport in West Bay.

Who knows what the environmental groups will try next. Hopefully the efforts to stop the airport construction will end and the construction will begin full force.

Panama City Beach - Winter Festival Possible?

The Panama City Beach officials are considering an annual winter festival at Pier Park. Imagine outdoor ice-skating at Pier Park, horse-drawn carriage rides along Front Beach Road, gulf beachfront resorts festooned with Christmas lights and a massive fireworks display to ring in the New Year.
“I think it would be a very, very good thing for Panama City Beach,” Mayor Gayle Oberst said this week. “This would be a wonderful way to give the whole month of December over to celebrating the winter season, for tourists and for those of us who live here as well.”
As discussed by the TDC committee, a Pier Park and Front Beach Road festival could include hiring an outside company that would erect an ice-skating rink, install a snowfield for sledding and bring in other attractions such as horse-drawn carriages. Other possible elements include outdoor motion pictures at Aaron Bessant Park, a major Christmas lighting contest for Front Beach Road residences and businesses and a rocking fireworks show on New Year’s Eve. One TDC official even suggested that at midnight on New Year’s Eve there could be a beach ball drop.
What suggestions do you have for the chamber or TDC?

Panama City Beach Fishing

Red Snapper decision made Thursday...The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted unanimously Thursday to maintain the Gulf of Mexico recreational red snapper season from April 15 to Oct. 31, but reduced the red snapper bag limit from four fish to two fish per person per day.
It is nice to have the opportunity to fish a longer season. The limit reduction seems like a good compromise.
