Panama City Beach - August Fishing Tournamant

Don’t forget that The Grand Lagoon National, America's Saltwater Fishing Tournament, will be held August 20-24. The Grand Lagoon National consists of eight competitive divisions: Big Game, Offshore, Inshore, Flats, Party Boat, Charter Boat, Kayak and Dive. This is an open-door tournament that will allow both experienced professionals and family enthusiasts to compete to win over $1 million in cash prizes.

The tournament appeals to all types of saltwater anglers. The Big Game division is sure to attract million dollar yachts and seasoned professional competitors hunting for the elusive giant Blue Marlin, Swordfish and Tuna. On the other end of the fishing spectrum, hundreds of kayak fishermen will paddle their way to glory. Marinas on the Grand Lagoon hold several fishing records, one being the State of Florida record for the largest Blue Marlin in 2001 that weighed in at 1,046 pounds.

The four-day event includes plenty of activities onshore, including food and beverage booths from local restaurants such as Capt. Anderson’s, Boatyard and The Treasure Ship, dock walks to view all the beautiful yachts, parades, firework displays and national recording artists Daryle Singletary and Billy Currington on Thursday, August 22 and Friday, August 23.

Bill Spann, who founded and served as Chairman for twenty-three years on the Bay Point Annual Billfish Invitational, will serve as tournament Chair for the Grand Lagoon National America’s Saltwater Fishing Tournament. Spann said he believes the event will be successful enough in the first year to make a good contribution to local charities and to establish a tournament that will be here for years to come.

Panama City Beach - Airport - Aerotropolus

Panama City-Bay County International Airport officials want the new $330 million facility to be an "aerotropolis" that draws international flights and business to West Bay. To meet that goal, airport leaders are in discussions with several international carriers and have hired John Kasarda, a scholar, author and the man who coined the term "aerotropolis." Airport Executive Director Randy Curtis said airport officials are in talks with several airlines in Canada and England. He described the discussions as ongoing but declined to name the airlines.

Kasarda is "the pre-eminent expert on economic development around airports," Cramer said. "He's most noted ... for his development of the concept of the aerotropolis." On his Web site, Kasarda describes the aerotropolis as an engine for economic development that attracts aviation-linked businesses, including hotel, entertainment, retail and corporate headquarters. An aerotropolis stretches for 20 miles outward from the airport and will be similar to a traditional metropolis, Kasarda wrote.

On my way out of Panama City Beach on July 8th I drove by the new airport site. I spent a few minutes talking with the guys working on the entrance road. The contractors are about to start pouring the main runway. I hope the authority is talking to Southwest as well as the international carriers.

Our Panama City Beach Condos are approximately 10 miles from the new airport. We are looking forward to learning what it is like to be in an aerotropolis.

Panama City Beach - Billfish Results $1 milliom

Gueats in our Panama City Beach Condos had the opportunity to enjoy the Billfish Tournament earlier in July. The panama City Beach Tournament paid Out Nearly $1 Million and Marked Silver Anniversary with Success of New Community Events

The Bay Point Invitational Billfish Tournament made history as 47 boats headed out to fish in the first major all-release billfish tournament on the Gulf Coast. The highly-anticipated tournament welcomed more than 10,000 attendees at Bay Point Marina July 9–13 to enjoy the live entertainment, an artist colony, local food, sponsor displays and, of course, the Friday and Saturday night weigh-ins.

Life is Good took top honors in the Catch and Release category with three blue and one white marlin released for 2050 points. The team walked away with $210,960. Second place went to Wynsong with one blue marlin and one sailfish. Wynsong also captured first place in the Tuna category with a 105.5-pound yellowfin tuna caught by Will Wilson for a total of $208,246, and third place, based on the time of release, went to Jolly-B with one blue marlin for $53,250.

Top Dolphin and $86,882 went to Ms. Mindy for their 51.5-pound dolphin caught by Jeff Friedman and first place Wahoo went to Cory Lockhart fishing aboard Trader’s Hill for his 72.3-pound wahoo worth $84,388.

For the first time in tournament history, the rules called for a release-only format for the billfish category.

In partnership with the Freedom Alliance, the Invitational also paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces by hosting five wounded Iraq War soldiers for a day of Gulf fishing. The soldiers, along with all those who had ever served in the military, were honored during the tournament with a touching standing ovation from the event crowds.

The Bay Point Invitational Billfish Tournament is hosted by the St. Joe Company and Bay Point Marina, and presented by Galati Yacht Sales and Viking Yachts. The 26th Annual Bay Point Invitational is set for July 15-19, 2009. For more information, visit www.baypointbillfish.com.

Panama Coty Beach - Skateboard Park

The Bay County skateboard park at the Pete Edwards Recreation Facility in Panama City Beach should be open byJuly 19th. The park has been under construction for approximately one month.

The Bay County skate park will boast a series of ramps, launches and rail slides that is inviting to a variety of skill levels. The park also is designed to blend, allowing skaters to flow from one obstacle to the next. Drop in the half pipe and there are a number of routes to take: go up the other side, drop off the side and over to the concrete ramps or launch onto the rail.

The park will not be lighted, and thus will operate initially only during daylight hours. There will not be a fee charged, but skaters will be required to sign an at-your-own-risk waiver and wear protective gear. The park also will be skateboard specific so "No BMXs".

Bring your boards if you are planning a trip to our Panama City Beach Condo.
