Panama City Beach 2008 Mardi Gras season

Annual Parade & Festival Next Weekend!!!

The local 2008 Mardi Gras season will start next Friday and Saturday, January 18th and 19th, when Panama City’s own Krewe of Massalina hosts its annual Parade and Festival. The theme for this year is "Majestic Bayou Carnivale".
The Krewe will kick things off Friday night with its traditional " Mardi Gras "Block Party" from 6pm until 11pm in Downtown McKenzie Park. Several vendors will already be set up offering a variety of items including arts & crafts, t-shirts, and Mardi Gras beads and collectibles. Many food vendors will also be on-hand serving up a variety of authentic Cajun dishes along with many popular festival treats. Entertainment will be provided by the long-time local band The Healers.
Saturday’s main Festival event runs from10am until 11pm in McKenzie Park, with all food and retail vendors open for business all day. A special treat is scheduled for the kids that come early with the 2008 Mardi Gras Queen Michelle Nelson reading fairy tales to the children.
**New Parade Time**
Since its inception, the Krewe of Massalina has always been a night parade. This year the Parade will begin at 3pm, instead of the traditional "sundown" start time, but will still follow the usual route down Harrison Ave. Parade floats will turn onto Harrison Ave. from 13th St. at Bay High School, and continue down the street, ending up at the Panama City Marina.
Many colorful floats from several area Mardi Gras organizations will be in this year’s parade, including Krewe of St. Andrews, Krewe of Margaritaville, and Krewe of Archers. Marching bands from local and area schools will also join in such as the Malone and Blountstown bands. Other varied and entertaining entries will also include local belly dancers, the Classic Cruisers Car Club, and the Thunder Angels motorcycle group.Musical entertainment will be provided by two great bands Saturday with the Hard Times Blues Band, and Slap Ruthie

Let the good times roll!!!

Rudy Giuliani Speaks in Panama City

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani rallied with an overflow crowd at Gulf Coast Community College on Wednesday in Panama City.
The former New York City mayor, is banking on a Jan. 29 win in Florida’s presidential primary to kick-start his campaign. He argued that his proposals, on topics such as reviving the economy and handling terrorism, were superior and more beneficial to Americans than the Democratic contenders’. The former mayor first stressed the importance of remaining on “offense” in the war on terrorism. Giuliani said he, unlike some of his rivals, will strengthen the U.S. military — all branches — by boosting the number of personnel and providing more modern equipment. Giuliani Also said it was important to reduce taxes on capital gains and on corporations and to eliminate the “death tax” on inheritances. He would continue President Bush’s tax cuts, he said, many of which otherwise would expire during his term.
Turnout for the rally was a very enthusiastic crowd of close to 500.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee plans to visit Destin next Wednesday for a rally at The Palms of Destin resort. The event is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. and last about 90 minutes. The event is open to the public.
