Panama City Beach - Cape St. George Light

If you are visiting our Panama City Beach Condo, a day trip to Apalachicola and St. George Island is a fun way to pass some time and see some historical buildings. If you go we recommend the restaurant on the corner in downtown Apalachicola for lunch.

ST. GEORGE ISLAND - The 153-year-old Cape St. George Light has been moved and opened again today. Three years ago the lighthouse sat on uninhabited Little St. George Island, accessible only by boat and boarded up as a safety hazard. It was leaning slightly as the Gulf of Mexico swirled past its base along the eroded shoreline until the 74-foot lighthouse finally succumbed to the sea, smashing to pieces.

On Saturday, the lighthouse doors opened and a line of people climbed the new set of pine steps circling inside the 19th-century bricks before, hoisting themselves up a metal ladder through a small rectangular hole to the lamp house. It marked the end of a rescue mission that was improbable at best and thought crazy by most. "It's just absolutely thrilling," said Eddie Lueken, 52, of Tallahassee as she stood in the glass-enclosed lamp room which was warmed by the sun. "This is a piece of history transplanted here."

Almost anyone who saw Cape St. George Light after it fell would have thought it was lost forever. Large chunks of bricks and the mangled metal lamp house were awash in the surf. Logic would have told most that it couldn't be saved. "It looked like such a heap of rubble that I thought it was overambitious to try it," said Mike Roehr, 67, who lives on St. George with his wife, Connie, 50. "It shows what I know." Shortly after it fell, Dennis Barnell and Terry Kemp went out to take a look. What they saw was discouraging, but they decided if dinosaurs can be pieced back together, so could Cape St. George Light. They were already part of a group, the St. George Lighthouse Association, that was hoping to stabilize the structure and move it back to higher ground.

Once the lighthouse crumbled, the mission changed. The association worked through a bureaucratic maze of federal, state and county government to get the project approved and started. The Federal Emergency Management Agency provided money to recover and move the lighthouse pieces. Volunteers spent thousands of hours cleaning the old bricks. The association raised money through T-shirt sales, fundraisers and other events and state lawmakers provided $350,000 to help. Contractors cut rates, volunteers provided labor and the lighthouse rose again at the end of the 4-mile bridge that connects St. George with Eastpoint on the other side of Apalachicola Bay, about 77 miles southwest of Tallahassee. "It was total devotion on their part," said Lueken, who has a vacation house on St. George. "It was a labor of love if there was ever one."

Residents and tourists from as far away as The Netherlands stood in line Saturday for about an hour to climb the 92 steps -- not including the ladder through the 22-inch by 21-inch rectangle to the top. One boy shouted to his parents, "Whoa! This is awesome!" in a voice that echoed around the small room. While maybe a little more subdued, adults making the climb were also enthralled. "Neat! Awesome! Look at the bridge," said Connie Roehr, experiencing an entirely new view of the long, narrow island that she's known her whole life. It wasn't her first time climbing steps in the lighthouse, but it was the first time she made it to the top. When Roehre was a child, her parents would take her by boat to Little St. George where the abandoned lighthouse stood. It wasn't open to the public, but she would still venture inside.
"There wasn't anything that said that we couldn't," Roehr said with a laugh. "We didn't go very far."

Panama City Beach - The Beach is Going Green

I am struggling with ideas for a post today, so how about a little Green Humor.

The following suggestion is from “The Circuit” the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce magazine. The latest issue was dedicated to going Green and the following suggestion was listed under a section about having Green meetings at work.

Use edible centerpieces. Centerpieces that consist of delicious fruits and veggies are a smart way to cut back on the cost and waste of expensive flower arrangements. Many florists fly in their products from all over the world, wasting and adding to their carbon footprint.

Seems to me that the person suggesting this forgot that lots of our fruit is also imported from all over the world, which would also waste and add to their carbon footprint. What about eating all of that fiber? Lot’s more trips to the bathroom resulting in the unnecessary use of millions of gallons of water

Why not just save the money and do without the flowers and fruit?

How about letting us know of other funny and bogus suggestions to go Green or some real ways to save and conserve.

Panama City Beach - Airport News Nobember 23, 2008

The Airport Authority has set a Dec. 19 deadline for what Chairman Joe Tannehill calls "the last piece of the puzzle" for the new international airport under construction at West Bay.

The hope is to add a 5,000-foot crosswind runway that will handle smaller aircraft and make traffic less congested on the 10,000-foot concrete runway under construction. Airport Authority members want to move forward so the smaller runway can be completed by the May 2010 airport opening date. The shorter asphalt runway will be used by smaller commercial aircraft and corporate jets and add a crucial safety factor to the new airport that pilots of larger international flights. Completion of the crosswind runway is not necessary for the new $318 million airport to open in May 2010. The smaller asphalt runway should cost about $18 million, far less than the larger $98 million concrete runway that will handle heavier aircraft and last up to 40 years. Current estimates are that the Airport Authority should have the money for the additional runway.

The airport currently is $17 million under budget, and there is about $17 million in untapped contingency funds. Another reason for the Dec. 19 deadline is that Phoenix Construction Services, which is building the larger runway, is about 55 percent completed on their part of the work. The company will be moving portions of its equipment from the site within 60 days. If the crosswind runway decision is delayed and Phoenix is forced to move equipment back to the site, the runway's expense could increase.

It is great to see the construction moving along. May 2010 will be here before we know it. The airport will be very convenient for the folks wanting to fly to Panama City Beach and stay in our Panama City Beach Condo. The airport is only 10 miles from Celadon Beach Resort…Jerry

Panama City Beach - Fishing & Duck Hunting

I did not have time to fish with James the last time we went to our Panama City Beach Condo at Celadon Beach Resort but I wish I had……

Capt. James Pic
November 11, 2008
Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

As the original duck guide in Northwest Florida a can assure you it looks like we are going to have a big year.

Let's talk about fishing first. The big bull reds are still around and easy to catch. We had three this morning along with a box full of spanish.
Then we had a big day with the Montemeyer family putting over 30 spanish in the box. We went through a lot of hooks that day. We lost as many or more than what was boated. Non stop action. Last, Gary Demchic, fly fished with me for two days catching blues and Spanish. Gary, hope to meet you in Alaska next fall.

DUCK HUNTING
I was the first duck guide in North Florida. You want to shoot ducks, you call me. That simple. I charge $85 per hunter per hunt and have knowledge of all the salt water in the area plus a bunch of lakes. This year with the wood duck limit being 3 per day I will be running some swamp hunts. Back in the day we used to shoot some mallards, black ducks, widgeon and teal in the swamps. We also saw some geese on occasion.

I love to hunt on Lake Wimico having taken pintails, cans, mallards and just about every other duck on that lake. A Wimico hunt, due to the distance, is $100 per hunter per hunt. All you have to do is have a gun, shells and camo when your with me. We stand in the water or hunt from a boat. I have portable blinds like you have never seen which makes us very mobile and gives me to move to where the ducks are flying. I have no problem with giving names and numbers of clients that have hunted with me. I run a first class operation that is priced fair.

Panama City Fishing Forecast:

Big schools of spanish and bonito will continue for a few more weeks for the fly fisherman, live bait or artificial.
Big bulls in the deeper water can be caught throughout the winter.
Trout and reds in the bayous and creeks will be the treat in the upcoming weeks.
Warren bayou will heat up....as if it's not hot already.

Target Species: Reds, trout, spanish, flounder and bonita. Some legal grouper in secret spots.

Panama City Beach - Sunday Airport Discussion

America's struggling airline industry needs more travelers in more seats going to more places. That eventually could determine success of Northwest Florida Regional Airport, Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport or Panama City-Bay County International Airport.

"When you have airports as close together as we are, the competition is there," said Frank Miller, the longtime boss at Pensacola's airport. "We're all going after the same passengers." Earlier this year, Pensacola added "Gulf Coast" to its name. It also has a $35 million expansion in progress.
In Valparaiso, the former Okaloosa Regional Airport now is Northwest Florida Regional.

And in Bay County, the $315 million airport scheduled for completion in 2010 has been trumpeting its "international" title for most of this year.

When you factor in the merger of Delta and Northwest airlines, it's been an interesting first year for Greg Donovan, Okaloosa County's airports director. "We need to have commercial service for military personnel, dependents and contactors. That's where the core value of our airport is," Donovan said. "The additional value is to help our region." For years, Northwest Florida Regional has been fighting the fact that people in Okaloosa County have been driving to Pensacola to get lower fares. But a recent Travelocity study of the top 20 destinations in this region shows that Northwest Florida Regional has lower fares to 11 of them. That includes Atlanta, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Colo., Kansas City, Mo., Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Tenn., Minneapolis, Orlando, San Francisco and St. Louis. And there are other numbers Donovan likes to share. In 2007, Northwest Florida Regional's cost per enplaned passenger was $3.90, well below the Florida airports' median cost of $5.34. Likewise, the airport's debt per enplaned passenger was $45. That again was below the Florida median of $46.43. And charting the 12 months from November 2007 to November 2008, Northwest Florida Regional was the only airport in Florida to have an increase (3.8 percent) in available seats. "We have that capacity, and I need people to use it," Donovan said. "We need to solidify a level of loyalty with people here looking at this airport as community resource instead of an institution on the Air Force base."

In Bay County, airport officials are placing most of their hopes in the 10,000-foot runway, which will be able to accommodate international flights. Once completed, the new Panama City-Bay County International Airport will be the largest in Northwest Florida. The airport is set to open in May 2010, and officials say they are working to secure a new legacy airline carrier, a discount carrier and FedEx.

In Pensacola, Miller was Donovan's boss for six-plus years. Miller said he considers Mobile, Ala., Regional Airport and Northwest Florida Regional as his main competition. He points to having low-cost carrier Air Tran as an advantage Northwest Florida Regional does not. And he admits everyone still is keenly interested in securing the big prize: Southwest Airlines. "Every airport wants a carrier like Southwest, and we've got a very strong business market here besides the leisure market," Miller said. "Anybody who would get Southwest would say it's a winner." Donovan says he's been talking with Southwest and will continue to do so. Meanwhile, a $14.7 million project under way will provide a new rental car facility on 20 acres east of the airport's terminal. The expansion, which will include a fuel farm for aircraft and rental cars and maintenance and cargo building, is expected to be completed in May 2009. But a $32 million terminal expansion has been put on hold because of the economic slump, Donovan said.

I live in Nashville. Generally fairs to the coast are $700+. Not sure about other markets. We need some competition in Panama City Beach to bring prices down and increase air traffic to the area. Hopefully the Bay County Airport can land Southwest and make it happen.

Panama City Beach - Airport Update November 2008

PANAMA CITY BEACH — Airport Authority Chairman Joe Tannehill promised Friday the new airport under construction near West Bay will draw several major airlines, including a "legacy" carrier and two international carriers.

A legacy carrier is one that revolves around a hub-and-spoke network and corporate structure, such as Delta, Northwest, American and United, airline experts say. Delta and Northwest, which are merging into one airline, already serve the existing airport.

The new Panama City-Bay County International Airport, with its 10,000-foot runway, will be the largest in Northwest Florida and also is poised to earn its "international" appellation, Tannehill told the Bay County Chamber of Commerce. Each of the international carriers will fly in once a week, he said. Airlines operating out of Bay County's new airport, set to open in May 2010, will not only include a legacy airline, but a discount carrier and a cargo carrier such as FedEx, Tannehill said. While legacy carriers usually include services such as first or business class and frequent flyer programs, discount carriers generally offer substantially lower fares by eliminating some traditional services, experts say.

Tannehill's comments came Friday as he gave chamber members an update of the airport's construction progress, including a slide show and short promotional video. More than 200 workers are toiling at the airport's site just north of County 388, he said. When completed, the project will have moved 4 million cubic yards of dirt and 500,000 cubic yards of "muck," Tannehill said. He said the $318-million project, which he called an "economic engine" that would fuel regional growth, would give the area a marketing strength it had not known in the past. In addition, the airport, with its 125,000-square-foot terminal, also would be the nation's first "green" carbon-neutral airport.

Getting closer all the time! Soon it will be easier for you to get to our Panama City Beach Condo at Celadon Beach Resort.
